A grant from the Target corporation is helping make an exciting performance workshop and show affordable and accessible to 30 young people. The program, Mainstage Center for the Arts’ Starmaker Workshop takes place at Williamstown Middle School on May 4, 5, and 11.

The students will work with work with members of Harmony, South Jersey’s Premiere Show Choir, as they learn the art of performing from vocal directors, choreographers and experienced show choir members. The workshop encompasses instruction in many performance skills including the correct use of a microphone; the art of ensemble work; how to deliver an exciting performance; how and where to focus performance energy; and how to use the mind, body and heart to bring an audience to its feet.

The Starmaker Workshop takes place Friday, May 4, 6 – 9 p.m. and Saturday March 5, , 12 noon – 8 p.m. Workshop participants return to Williamstown Middle School on Friday, May 11th to take the stage with Harmony Show Choir in a musical revue. The show is open to the public and begins at 7 p.m.

“Mainstage Center for the Arts is proud to partner with Target to bring this opportunity to local students. Both Target and Mainstage are committed to the South Jersey Community and to education,” said Joe Bretschneider, executive director, Mainstage Center for the Arts. “The Program enhances the arts education experience for students in South Jersey schools. In recent years, budget cuts have limited the chance for students to discover their creativity through school-based arts education experiences. The Starmaker Workshop brings music and dance into schools, helping students develop their talents, grow in self-confidence, and develop leadership skills.”

The grant is part of Target’s ongoing efforts to build strong, safe and healthy communities across the country. These efforts include Target’s long history of giving 5 percent of its income to communities, which today equals more than $3 million every week. As part of this commitment, Target is on track to give $1 billion for education by the end of 2015 to help kids learn, schools teach and parents and caring adults engage.

Registration for the Starmakers Workshop is $25 and includes a souvenir songbook and performance t-shirt. Tickets to the musical revue, are $10. Tickets can be purchased at the door, Williamstown Middle School, 561 Clayton Rd., Williamstown, NJ.

In addition to the Target grant, this program is made possible in part with funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and by funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. This program is also made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey Cultural Trust.

Looking for high-quality, fun performing arts classes in dance, voice, acting, or music? Come to Mainstage Center for the Arts Studio Open House; meet the teachers; and learn about the classes, including some new and exciting offerings. This event takes place Wednesday, September 14, 6:30 p.m. in the Little Theatre, Lincoln Hall, Camden County College,Blackwood.

Mainstage teachers are looking forward to this opportunity to greet prospective students and answer any questions they might have about the classes.
“I always enjoy watching the childrens’ eyes light up as they begin developing a rapport with their dance, voice, or acting teacher at this special event,” said Anne Marie Weaver, Mainstage’s Director of Special Projects and acting instructor. “This brief, informative evening can open up a whole new world for students and their parents in our supportive, nurturing environment.”

At the Open House, Mainstage staff will share information about the more than 30 affordable classes offered, ranging from the Kids in Motion dance class for three-year-olds to private vocal lessons for teenagers and adults. They will also highlight new courses including:

Acting with accents, 9th through 12th graders will survey basic techniques for learning and applying stage dialects. The class will cover the following dialects: British RP, Irish, Cockney, American Southern, New York-Brooklyn, and more.

Shakespeare, this class for high school students is designed for actors of all skill levels and will focus on the development of the modern-day Shakespearean actor.

Hip Hop, Level I and II, Level I for ages 10 -14, is an exciting high-energy class that teaches the basics of Hip Hop. Level II, for ages 14 and up with one or more years of Hip Hop, features fast-paced, cutting-edge choreography which focuses on style and form.

Mainstage courses also include ballet, tap, jazz, and Broadway dancing; Zumba for adults; photography; voice, vocal instruction, and vocal coaching; classes in guitar and piano, and acting classes for preschoolers through high school. The acting classes are designed so that each age group has a lot of fun, gains self-esteem, and learns skills at an appropriate level – from imaginative play for preschoolers through more formal theatrical training for older students.
In addition, for the first time in three years, the talented performers of the Young Americans will bring the newest version of their National Musical Outreach Tour to South Jersey. This year’s workshop, hosted by Mainstage will concentrate on voice, dance, and performance techniques led by the Young Americans and their staff. The workshop takes place November 10-12 at Timber Creek High School.
