HIP HOP:  OPEN LEVEL                                                                             Teacher: Maria Guldin

Hip Hop incorporates a variety of old and new urban dance styles. The dancing represents body movements that go with the beat and rhythm of hip hop music. Hip hop dancing is very dynamic and helps the dancers improve flexibility, develop body balance, and coordination. Session 1 and 2 of both levels will work on skills and freestyle. 

 

FLEXIBILITY WORKSHOP: OPEN LEVEL                                         Teacher: Steven Clair

This workshop will focus on the dancers flexibility through exercises and stretches to safely enhance their personal flexibility.  A strong and flexible body can create correct and safe lines in all forms of dance and enhance their technique.  Session 1 will focus on Flexibility and Injury Prevention.  Session 2 will focus on Flexibility and Strength.

Students will explore acting through character development using their mind, body, and imagination! They will explore all the amazing things they can do to create full and fun characters using their body and their voice.   Through the use of existing scripts, students will use these skills to create a specific character allowing them to also work on projection, diction, and a clear understanding of the text. 



BROADWAY AT HOME: EXPANDING YOUR PERFORMANCE SKILLS THOUGH SONG and DANCE

This next-level musical Theatre Class continues education & training of important musical theatre skills in singing, acting & dance through group work, individual performance, and theatre games. Students benefit most when taking both Session 1 Part A and Session 2 Part B.

NAILING THE AUDISH: SONG PREP                                             TeacherMegan Ruggles

Preparing students to successfully audition for Musical Theatre. This class will be partnered with “Nailing the Audish: Dance!” The class will include Physical Presentation & understanding what directors are looking for?  Students will learn about type, receive monologue resources & learn about musical theatre genres. Training will include performance coaching, how to create an Audition Book, how to make music cuts, and how to walk into the audition room.  Final classes will include Mock auditions  Audition book ‘Show & Tell’ w/ rapid-fire audition book quiz, Students get the most out of this experience when they also take Session 2 Nailing the Audish: Dance Prep

In this class, we will break down comedy in its essence with many laughs along the way. Each student will get to workshop their own monologue, perform scene work with a classmate, and sharpen their comedic skills through fun exercises and examples. Even over zoom, the students will focus on creating their own character through vocal and physical acting while discussing and analyzing their favorite comedic actors. 



PUPPET PLAYTIME – Sock Puppets                                          Teacher: Sarah Gafgen

An actor’s most important job is to tell someone’s story. The use of puppets is a GREAT way to develop this skill, build great characters, and strong acting skills in this unique way.  Students will build a sock puppet and practice storytelling and scenes with their classmates. They will use tools they have around their house to build a puppet, create characters and  practice storytelling with that puppet


ADAPTING A STORY TO A PLAY – Short Stories                                           Teacher: Sarah Gafgen

This is a great class for those students who love to write and have often created their own plays.  This class will begin with teaching students about the art of adaptation and how to turn a short story into a play. We will take well known short stories and over the course of our workshop, we will transform these stories into scripts that we will perform at the end of our time together.

TECHNICAL THEATRE – Whose Job is that?                                        Teacher: Sarah Gafgen
AGES:  11 – High School                  Session 1                                             Mondays   6:20 – 7:00
This class will introduce important concepts in technical theatre including stage management, costume design, and building, set design and building, prop design and building, light design, and sound design. Discuss the various roles in theatre and what jobs they typically cover during a production.  Students taking this class will enjoy taking their technical knowledge and focus it into a project during Session 2 Technical Theatre – Focus In.


GUITAR CLUB                                                                                                Teacher: Ashley Bitterman

A small group introduction to learning guitar. Students will learn about the instrument, basic chords, and rhythm patterns.  A seven-week program.

This class will be focused on the art of song development. Students will learn self-expression through lyrics and melodies. A seven-week program.

This class is an Intro to writing comedic movies. The class will begin by focusing on the basics like format and style followed by structure and writing short scenes.   The goal is to have a finished piece by the end of the class receiving feedback from the instructor and other students as the pieces are developed.

 

BALLET TECHNIQUE LEVEL  2                                                           Teacher: Kate Orlando
Ages: 12 and up                                          Sessions  1                             Wednesdays 6:00-6:40pm
Ballet is the foundation of many dance forms and will maximize technique and longevity in a career of dance. It provides grace, poise, and technique needed to be proficient in all other areas of dance. Ballet classes will help dancers with posture, flexibility, fitness, balance, self-discipline, and self-confidence. Session 1  will focus on Turns and Variations. 

 

BALLET REPERTOIRE WORKSHOP LEVEL  2                              Teacher: Kate Orlando

To further our ballet students virtual learning experience from the technique classes, students can work on choreography on these workshops focusing on the Nutcracker!  For our Younger students in  Level 1, during Session 1 we will be “Becoming Clara!”.  During Session 2 we will move on to a divertissement from Act 2Level 2 will learn a different divertissement from Act 2 in each session. 

 

JAZZ TECHNIQUE LEVEL  2                                                                Teacher: Steven Clair

Jazz dance is an exploration of style and presentation. Classes emphasize musicality and body alignment, conditioning, stretch and strengthening, rhythm and stylization as well as fun and innovative choreography. During Session 1 students  will focus on Skills and Style followed by Musicality and Performance Skills in session 2.

To further our Jazz students virtual learning experience from the technique classes, students can work on choreography in our Jazz Workshops!  Level 1 will learn Broadway Jazz Style choreography during Session 1 and move onto Disney and Pop in Session 2!   Level 2 will learn Broadway Jazz style choreography (including a focus in Fosse) in Session 1 and move onto Latino Jazz and Pop in Session 2


TAP TECHNIQUE LEVEL   2                                                                                 Teacher: Roberta Curless

Tap classes are designed to develop rhythm, style and sound.  Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement.  Session 1 of both levels will focus on the style of Rhythm Tap.  Session 2 of both Levels will focus on Broadway style Tap.

Contemporary modern combines ballet and modern techniques with musical and emotional expression with a strong focus on modern techniques (contractions and release, off-center balances and suspension) as well as musicality and self-expression.  Session 1 of both levels will focus on Alignment and Floor work. Session 2 of both levels will focus on the different Modern Techniques

Students taking this class will be introduced to the process of writing a screenplay for a short film.  Each week a new step of the process will be introduced. The goal will be to have a short film screenplay completed and ready to put into production in Session 2.

Actors will meet weekly to expand upon the skills they’ve learned and study new forms of performance methods. Scene study will be an early focus, leading to character work and world-building techniques. We will have a focus on new media forms of performance as well as the individual performance with the desired result being a stronger ability to make interesting choices quickly. All of these skills will benefit the actors in auditions as well as on stage or on the set.  Students are encouraged to take both Session 1( Part A) and Session 2 (Part B) to get the most out of this class.

 

NAILING THE AUDISH: DANCE PREP                                                           Teacher: Lindsay Deal

Preparing students to successfully audition for Musical Theatre. This class is geared towards learning audition dance combinations and executing those combos with ease. Classes will include warmups, isolations, then focus on short sections of choreography with a focus on precision, and memory. Weeks will be split into different styles of choreography so students are well versed in each style. Students are also encouraged to take Nailing the Audish: SONG PREP for full Musical Theatre audition preparation. 


AUDITIONING FOR FILM/TV                                                                   Teacher: Deckonti Tiah

Students will be given the exciting opportunity to work on scenes and audition sides from the latest television shows, movies, and commercials as well as original content. Each month will focus on different acting techniques to hone their craft.  It is recommended that students also continue to take ON CAMERA FILM/TV ACTING for Session 2.

This class will cover the basics of directing for the stage (it will cover and build on what was introduced during the virtual Summer Stage class). Students are also encouraged to register for Devised Theatre offered in session 2.

 


PERFORMANCE-BASED MUSICAL THEATRE INTENSIVE

From preparing an audition to adding repertoire, or just learning new tools, this class focuses students on sharpening and developing musical performance skills. It is designed to allow the student to learn from weekly one-on-one work as well as from watching other students. Each month, students will be assigned a new song to work on for class which will be coached in a masterclass setting (aka zoom). On select months, we will have them themed toward a specific musical theatre genre.  Students are encouraged to take both Session 1 and 2 to get the most out of this program.

Using the skills developed in Session 1 of ACTING OUT students will then begin creating characters that are exciting to them.  Using these characters, they will create a storyline and write a play to showcase those characters. As they focus on these characters they will continue to exercise all of their acting skills to better be heard and understood on stage.

IMPROVISATIONAL ACTING (Improv)                                  Teacher: Rachel Maselek

In this class, students will challenge their wit and gain important theatrical skills through improv. We will break down the basic “rules” of improv and sharpen the ability to think on the spot through exercises and games. Students will be given the chance to perform completely improvised scenes with other classmates in a fun and supportive workshop-style setting, and an opportunity to discuss and analyze professional improvisational actors.

We will take one well-known story (such as Rapunzel, Elves and the Shoemaker, Wizard of Oz,etc. – students will help choose our story) and over the course of our workshop, we will transform these stories into scripts which we will perform at the end of our time together.

Students will select 2 areas of focus from within the technical theatre world and they will work on creating a project within that area from beginning to end. This includes the design and execution of the project.

 Students will focus on what it takes to be a working actor after booking the role. They will learn how honesty and truth centered acting are fundamental through comedic and dramatic monologues and scenes. Students will learn how to analyze a character and script to bring a scene to life as well as the steps are taken to accurately portray a character and connect with their audience through the lens of a camera. 


DEVISED THEATRE                                                                         Teacher: Francine Odri

How to create original characters and storylines for a production–the goal is to use improvisation exercises to create an original short play for virtual performance. We will build upon what we discussed regarding Directing in the first quarter, but taking the first quarter is not essential for the second quarter.
