 A Letter From the Founders

Dear Parents and Summer Stagers,Welcome to Summer Stage 2013!
 
Twenty-five years of “summertime and happiness!”
 
     25 Summers ago, Summer Stage was created. At that time we had 65 campers and 9 staff. There was nothing else like it in the South Jersey area. We performed 4 shows that summer in a 7 week period. During the next 24 years, Summer Stage grew from a program contained in the Gloucester Township Department of Recreation, into Mainstage Center for the Arts where we serve over 1,000 children each year, employ a staff of nearly a hundred throughout the year, and present programs for every segment of the community we serve.      As the years went by, we have witnessed many towns adapt programs similar to ours and we are proud of the fact that we were able to demonstrate to the South Jersey Community that kids who love to sing, dance, act, make movies, work on lights, and design, need a place where they can be with others like themselves. It seems that every community in South Jersey now has a theatre camp for kids and we believe that our communities are better for it.

     During the past 25 years, we have kept our programs growing, always trying to be the best at what we do. Our location at Camden County College provides our campers with access to a professional food service, 24/7 professional college security, and a wonderful performance space at the Dennis Flyer Theatre. We have a certified school nurse on duty and a medical doctor on call. We also have grown our programs to include children as young as second grade, through seniors in high school, all in age appropriate programs. We have grown from 4 shows in a summer to 8 shows so that each program gets to shine in the spotlight. We provide most of the costumes for our shows as part of the tuition, and we provide supplemental arts education classes taught by professionals at no additional cost. We also have added a latch key program (Stage Key) for parents with challenging work schedules so that their kids can also participate.

      This year, we are adding dance specific programs to the schedule. We are proud of what we established 25 years ago, but realize that in order to remain as the leader, we need to keep evolving and innovating as a program that serves you, your family, and the South Jersey Community.This year, as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary, Summer Stage promises to be one of our finest. We have excellent new shows, many new and exciting additions to the program and our staff–all with an emphasis on enrichment in the arts, building new and lasting friendships, learning and developing new skills, but most importantly, FUN. It is easy to see why Mainstage Center for the Arts’ Summer Stage program was voted one of the best in South Jersey five years in a row by readers of the “Courier Post”. We hope you and your children have a wonderful summer. See you at the shows!
